We're nearing a holiday that's a very important celebration in the United States; it's El Día de la Batalla de Puebla, or as Americans call it, Cinco de Mayo. The Battle of Puebla's not a big holiday in Mexico; it's a government holiday only in the states of Puebla and Veracruz-- it's not a Federal holiday in Mexico.<img style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; border: black 1px solid; padding: 7px;" title="Amate painting.

Being a police officer is a dangerous job. The officer's family members worry every day that she or he will be safe while on duty. A police officer's retirement party is a happier occasion than any other professional retirement: not only has the officer concluded a successful career, but the officer has also survived--it is a lucky day, since police officers do put their lives on the line every day. We celebrate National Law Enforcement Week every May to honor the work of law enforcement offi...

Fighting Enemies or Disease, Asian Americans Offer a Rich Heritage

As Asian American and Pacific Islander American month kicks off, and the anniversary of WWII's VE-Day approaches (May 8), it's a good time to talk about a major contribution of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. The book Nisei Linguists: Japanese Americans in the Military Intelligence Service During WWII is an excellent starting point to examine that history. When the United States entered WWII in 1941, the War Department knew that their intelligence efforts would not be successful wi...

Earth Day was yesterday, April 22 and Arbor Day is Friday, April 26; this week is the perfect time to do something to help a tree grow or plant something new and celebrate the miracle of spring. If there are little ones in your life--children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews of friends of kids that you love-- it's a good time to teach them to love trees, plants, and flowers more too.

The best way to get children to appreciate nature is to take them outdoors-- and "according to the...

Sadly, most adults in this country can remember some disaster or tragedy that's happened to them or one of their loved ones in recent history. Most people in my office have their own exit strategy story from 9/11. We all recall how we tried to cope, and we feel deep sympathy for fellow citizens in similar situations.

After the horrific events at the Boston Marathon this past Monday, many Americans are again in the unfortunate position of needing assistance in the face of life-changing ...

It's that Time of Year Again: Reproducible Tax Forms

If you haven't filed your tax forms yet, you've still got a little time left until April 15, this year's tax deadline day. Hopefully, you've got your forms already.

One lucky thing about filing taxes in the United States? If you haven't got those forms, you can get copies of them almost anywhere. Drop in to your local Federal depository library for the reproducible copies. Most of the libraries get the reproducible tax forms packet, which includes forms for nearly all your basic ...

We just began the month of April, "the cruellest month", according to Eliot, and he wasn't far wrong. April has the third highest suicide rate by month according to statistics compiled by the CDC. I found the CGP record this Veterans Affairs (VA) report from our February 2013 record load: Suicide Data Report, 2012, and it seemed timely.

As the VA February 1, 2013 press release states, "In accordance with the President's August 31, 2012, Executive Order, VA has completed hiring and trai...

March is Women's History Month and I am writing this posting on International Women's Day. If I had the twelve hours--round trip-- to hit the road, I'd head for the Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, New York and celebrate how far we have come as a nation.

It would definitely be a work related trip. The U.S. Government Printing Office printed Elizabeth Cady Stanton's most famous-- and in her estimation, her best--speech in 1915. She delivered her address, Solitude...

Anyone who's looking for a job, or knows someone who's looking for a job, will likely feel piqued interest when the President starts explaining how he plans to create more jobs. When the President gave his State of the Union speech on February 12, I sat on the edge of the sofa, trying to gain a sense of the Federal Government's plans for the Country's economic recovery. I suspect much of the rest of the country was hovering in a similar place. However, watching the brief portion of the State ...

On Monday, 28 November 2011, President Obama signed off on the most significant step since the Truman Administration (wow!) to improve the management of Federal records. In his memorandum, President Obama stated, "When records are well managed, agencies can use them to assess the impact of programs, to reduce redundant efforts, to save money, and to share knowledge within and across their organizations. In these ways, proper records management is the backbone of open government."

Stay ...

It wouldn't achieve National Park status until 1919.

I encourage you all to think about how much the National Park Service offers American citizens.
