Documenting "Acquired Tastes"

“...because, you know, government docs are the bomb...”

Hello librarians! My name is Caleb Robinson and I'm a content acquisition specialist for the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) here at the U.S. Government Printing Office. Prior to working here, I spent several years as a librarian for DC Public Schools and the Johnson City Public Library. When not poring over government documents I like to knit, crochet, and read...some of my favorite authors are A.S. Byatt, Ian McEwan, David Mitchell, and China Mieville. Over the next several months (or until they take my keyboard away), I'll be blogging about new resources acquired by my department.

Each month the acquisition department selects hundreds of books, pamphlets, posters, CDs, and other material produced by the various agencies and bureaus of the Federal Government for inclusion in the FDLP. These items then make their way through classification and cataloging before being sent out to depository libraries in print or electronic format. Whenever we see a title that seems particularly interesting, we mark it as "hot" and do our best to rush it through the pipeline.

Because of the large number of materials entering the program in any given month, it can be difficult to keep up with all of it. The point of this blog is to highlight some of the hot titles coming out of my department in the hopes that they're of interest to the larger community and promote discussion. I'll be uploading new posts every two weeks—feel free to post questions, comments, and suggestions for future improvements.

I wondered about this process!

Hello Caleb,

My University of Maryland iSchool (LBSC 767 Access to Federal Government Information) class had a tour of the GPO this very Wednesday and I forgot to ask George Barnum about how non-GPO printed agency materials are selected for the program. I know that agencies produce masses of material, as the LOC sends them to the McKeldin Regional on campus and it takes time and volunteer hands to sort through the documents to see if GPO has adopted the agency publication. Some of them are simply fascinating. Thank you for sharing this with us!
