While working on a WWII related reference question, I came across a document that might make a good conversation piece at your depository:

Lewis, George G., and John Mewha. 1955. History of prisoner of war utilization by the United States Army, 1776-1945. Washington: Dept. of the Army. (D 114.19/3:P 93, item 0344-G)

This document was originally produced in 1955. According to the forward:

Does your library have a lot of young people? Then consider putting out the Fall 2009 issue of Occupational Outlook Quarterly (OOQ). Its cover story is Careers in auto racing: Work in the fast lane and features a picture of a race car. OOQ is also available online and may be viewed at http://www.bls.gov/opub/ooq/.

What sorts of govdocs do you highlight for the jr and sr high school set?

Retiring in Debt? An example to make docs relevant

In my library, the Social Security Bulletin (SSA 1.22:) is a display periodical. The most current issue on our shelves is v. 69, no. 2 (2009). I noticed the following cover article:

Retiring in Debt? Differences Between the 1995 and 2004 Near-Retiree Cohorts (p. 13)

With so many people concerned both about the economic situation and worried about their retirement, this seems like a good article to highlight in your library.  The Bulletin is also available on the web at http://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/, so this highlight could be done on your website or blog as well.

Foxes in Fish Reports

I subscribe to the RSS feed of GPO's Registry of U.S. Government Publication Digitization Projects at http://registry.fdlp.gov. Recently that feed alerted me to a repository of United States Fish Commission Annual Reports at http://docs.lib.noaa.gov/rescue/cof/data_rescue_fish_commission_annual_reports.html

Knowing that a good amount of Alaska related information can be found in pre-1959 federal documents, I had a look at a few reports. I was surprised to find that information about fox farming was included in the fish commission reports. It's true. Go look up the 1920 report and turn to page 64 in the PDF file.

Alaska had a number of island fox farms early in the 20th century. I've answered questions about them in the past, but would have never thought to look in a fisheries report for a land mammal.
